  • Cambodian Cashew Industry Poised for Major Boost as Global Giant Eyes Investment

    Jun 13th, 2025

Cambodia’s burgeoning cashew industry is on the cusp of a significant transformation following the establishment of Cashew Industrial Park (CIP). A pivotal meeting between the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) and Royal Nuts PVT Company, one of the world’s largest cashew processors, in San Francisco, USA in 2022. The meeting has sparked considerable optimism for a substantial foreign direct investment in CIP. Royal Nuts, which boasts extensive processing facilities in India and a massive plant in Ivory Coast with a capacity of 100,000 metric tons (MT) of raw cashew nuts (RCN) per year, has expressed keen interest in establishing a processing plant in Cambodia. To facilitate this potential investment, CAC organized a comprehensive trip for a Royal Nuts delegation to Cambodia. The delegation engaged with key stakeholders, including the Department of Agro-Industry (DAI) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, CAPRED, Canadia Bank Plc, and a local legal firm. A crucial component of their visit was a site inspection in Kampong Thom province, which reportedly ignited the company’s ambition to initiate a pilot project of approximately 15,000 MT per year as early as next year. Further bolstering the investment prospects, CAC encouraged Royal Nuts to engage with the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) to explore potential government incentives. This meeting was organized by HE. Kong Vimean, Secretary General of General Secretariat of CDC. This engagement proved highly fruitful, with the delegation being honored to welcome and be joined by representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office, specifically those in charge of the Cashew Industrial Park (CIP). During this high-level meeting, H.E. Dr. Kang Chandararoth and H.E. Lim Socheat, advisors to the Prime Minister, clarified the government’s commitment to the CIP. They emphasized that the government is preparing to officially announce and actively encourage Royal Nuts to participate, offering significant benefits such as tax exemption and tariff incentives through the Qualification Investment Project (QIP-Plus). H.E. Hoeurn Somnieng, Deputy Secretary General of the Secretariat of the CDC, also highlighted key aspects of Cambodia’s favorable investment law. Encouraged by the positive reception and the promising incentives, the Royal Nuts delegation has reportedly decided to commence the project as soon as possible. Furthermore, the company has indicated an ambitious plan to expand the project’s capacity to 120,000 MT if the initial phase progresses smoothly. This potential investment is heralded as a significant boon for Cambodia’s industrial sector. Royal Nuts has identified Chinese and Middle Eastern markets as key targets, citing a strong demand for premium cashew nuts originating from Cambodia. The move is expected to not only boost local cashew processing capabilities but also create numerous employment opportunities and enhance Cambodia’s position in the global cashew market.
