  • Chinese envoy backs cashew industry in K Thom

    Jun 16th, 2025

The envoy’s visit to the province is part of a broader strategy to support value-added agricultural products and strengthen Cambodia’s domestic trade ecosystem. Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin Friday pledged to help attract Chinese companies to establish factories processing cashew nuts and other agricultural products in Kampong Thom province. He remarks came after he met with Kampong Thom provincial Governor Nuon Pharath and visited the cashew processing company on Friday. “It was a pleasure talking with Governor Nuon Pharath, and visiting the cashew processing company together with him,” Ambassador Wang wrote on his social media, adding, “Both of us believe that it is feasible to attract more Chinese companies to set up cashew and other agricultural product processing factories in Kampong Thom. And we agree to promote the Sambor Prei Kuk temple to Chinese tourists.” Pharath also said that Ambassador Wang’s visit will contribute to promoting cooperation between the two countries, especially in promoting the economy of Kampong Thom province by promoting investment in agriculture, agro-industry, tourism, and new cooperation between Kampong Thom province and provinces of the People’s Republic of China. “The Kampong Thom Provincial Administration would like to welcome and deeply thank the Ambassador for his meaningful visit,” he said. At the first Congress of the National Assembly and Senate in early June, Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the cashew sector support project. He announced that the Royal Government is preparing to launch a pilot project for the cashew industry in Kampong Thom province, which will be developed as a new type of industrial park. Regarding the cashew nut, the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) hosted a promotional meeting on Friday focused on increasing the sale of Cambodian cashew products at Amazon cafés across the country. According to the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC), the meeting held at the ministry aimed to strengthen links between local producers and retail outlets, promoting greater visibility and consumer access to high-quality Cambodian cashew kernels. “The move is part of a broader strategy to support value-added agricultural products and strengthen Cambodia’s domestic trade ecosystem,” the CAC statement read. In recent years, the ministry has facilitated the sale of processed cashew nuts through partnerships with Cambodian civil aviation, supermarkets, hotels, and the Cambodian Association of Chefs. These efforts are designed to create convenient and sustainable market channels for local producers, contributing to economic growth and rural development. According to a report from CAC, Cambodia produced 850,000 tonnes of cashew nuts last year, representing a 26.8 percent increase year over year, and exported 815,000 tonnes, up 31 percent.
