  • Farmers tap cashew apple for new income stream

    Apr 6th, 2026

In a bid to transform an often-overlooked agricultural byproduct into a sustainable income source, a group of farmers, scientists and agri-enthusiasts have launched an innovative initiative titled ‘Cashew Apple to Market’. The campaign aims to unlock the commercial potential of cashew apples through value addition, grassroots experimentation, and knowledge sharing. The initiative is led by Shree Padre, a researcher and editor of the Kannada agricultural magazine Adike Patrike. Speaking about the effort, he said the goal is to convert the highly perishable and often discarded cashew apple into a viable income stream for farmers across coastal and Malnad regions. Ad Collaborative effort across institutions At the heart of the initiative is an active WhatsApp group named Cashew Apple Value Addition (CAVA), which has brought together around 45 members from diverse backgrounds. The group includes scientists from the Directorate of Cashew Research, Kerala Agricultural University, and the Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, as well as members from Brazil, a country known for its cashew processing expertise. Participants regularly exchange ideas, share experimental results, and provide feedback on processing techniques and product development. While technologies for cashew apple processing have existed in research laboratories for years, stakeholders point out that these innovations have not effectively reached farmers or markets. Turning waste into value Cashew apples, which grow alongside cashew nuts, are typically discarded despite being rich in nutrients. Their short shelf life and high perishability have limited their commercial use. However, recent experiments by farmers are beginning to change this perception. Around 25 farmers have started preparing cashew apple juice, a natural beverage believed to have nutritional and medicinal benefits. Ad In Uttara Kannada’s Yellapur taluk, farmer Nagaraj Bhat is among those experimenting with the product. He noted that earlier attempts were hindered by the fruit’s strong astringency, making it difficult to consume. Tackling the astringency challenge One of the major hurdles in popularising cashew apple products has been their natural astringency, caused by tannins. However, simple and effective solutions are now being shared among farmers. According to inputs from the Plantation Corporation of Kerala, adding a small quantity of sago (sabudana) paste or rice gruel to the juice helps settle tannins within minutes, significantly improving taste and drinkability. This low-cost technique has made it easier for farmers to produce consumable juice without requiring complex processing equipment. Early success stories and market potential Entrepreneurs have already begun exploring the commercial potential of cashew apple products. Thippeswamy, a retired engineer and organic farmer from Chitradurga, has conducted multiple trials and now produces and sells cashew apple juice locally. Encouraged by positive consumer response, he has invested in equipment to scale up production, indicating early signs of market viability. Elsewhere, innovative models are emerging. In Jhargram, West Bengal, a resort owner has been serving cashew apple juice as a welcome drink for the past three years, helping promote the beverage in a region known for cashew cultivation. Scope for expansion Experts believe that cashew apple juice could emerge as a refreshing, low-cost health drink, especially during summer months. With increasing awareness about natural and functional beverages, the product has the potential to carve out a niche in both local and urban markets. Shree Padre emphasised that greater involvement from cooperatives, self-help groups, and corporate players could significantly expand the reach of such products. Organised support in terms of processing, packaging, branding, and distribution will be key to scaling up production. Conclusion The ‘Cashew Apple to Market’ initiative reflects how innovation at the grassroots level can transform agricultural waste into economic opportunity. By bridging the gap between research and real-world application, the movement has the potential to create a new value chain for farmers. If supported by policy, investment, and market linkages, cashew apples could soon shift from being discarded produce to a profitable enterprise across Karnataka and beyond.
