  • Coffee and cashew nuts reach new export milestones

    Dec 26th, 2024

Previously, coffee exports in the 2023-2024 crop year (from October 2023 to September 2024) also exceeded the 5 billion USD mark for the first time in a crop year. Thus, 2024 is a year of great export success for the Vietnamese coffee industry when it surpassed the 5 billion USD mark in both the crop year and the calendar year. And coffee became the third agricultural product after vegetables and rice, with an export turnover exceeding 5 billion USD. The high export price of coffee is the main reason for Vietnamese coffee to reach this important export milestone. Because in 2024, due to the decrease in output, the amount of coffee exported decreased significantly. In the first 11 months of the year, the amount of coffee exported was more than 1.2 million tons, down 14% compared to the same period in 2023. In that context, the coffee export turnover in the past 11 months increased by more than 35% thanks to the record high price. In October, the average coffee export price reached 5,720 USD/ton, the highest level in history and up 59% compared to the same period last year. In November, the average coffee export price decreased slightly compared to October, but remained at a very high level of 5,581 USD/ton. As a result, Vietnam's coffee export price in the first 11 months of this year reached an average of 4,052 USD/ton, up 57% compared to the same period in 2023. The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that in 2024, coffee is the agricultural product with the strongest price increase among Vietnam's key export products. According to Mr. Do Ha Nam, Vice President of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), 2024 is an unprecedented year in the history of Vietnamese coffee as well as world coffee, especially in terms of coffee prices. Vietnamese coffee prices are at the highest level in the world and Robusta coffee prices are at times higher than Arabica coffee prices. On the London exchange, for the first time in history, Robusta coffee prices exceeded the $5,000/ton mark. Cashew exports exceed 4 billion USD According to the General Department of Customs, as of mid-December, cashew nut exports had reached 4.2 billion USD. This is the first time in the history of the cashew industry that cashew nut exports have exceeded the 4 billion USD mark. Surpassing the 4 billion USD mark marks a new step forward for the cashew industry after many years of maintaining an export turnover of over 3 billion USD. The first time the cashew industry exported over 3 billion USD was in 2017. From then until 2023, the export turnover of cashew nuts has always been between over 3 billion USD and nearly 4 billion USD, with the highest year being 2023 (over 3.64 billion USD). Cashew nut exports exceeded the $4 billion mark, mainly due to a sharp increase in export volume. According to the General Department of Customs, from the beginning of the year to December 15, the amount of cashew nuts exported reached 696 thousand tons, much higher than the record export volume in 2023 (644 thousand tons). Thus, by the end of this year, the amount of cashew nuts exported will certainly exceed the 700 thousand tons mark for the first time. In addition, the increase in export prices also contributed to a new record in export turnover. In the first 10 months of 2024, the average export price of Vietnam's cashew nuts reached 5,873 USD/ton, up 3% over the same period last year. Cashew nut exports to traditional markets generally grew well this year, with many markets experiencing double-digit growth. Specifically, in the first 10 months of 2024, cashew nut exports to the United States increased by 33%, China increased by 14%, the Netherlands increased by 14%, the United Arab Emirates increased by 75%, Germany increased by 24%, Canada increased by 30%... Previously, the cashew industry had set a target of achieving an export turnover of 4 billion USD by 2020. However, it was not until 2024 that the target of 4 billion USD in cashew nut exports became a reality.
