According to IAM general director Ilídio Bande, looking at current production levels, the country will this year be able to commercialize and export around 160,000 tons of raw cashew nuts. The source said that the quantity will bring significant gains to producers, traders and exporters, since the reference price in the current campaign is 45 meticais per kilogram (less than US$1.00), compared to 35 meticais in the last campaign. For Ilídio Bande, the current challenge is related to improving the quality and promoting Mozambican cashews, in order to improve competitiveness in the international market. “It’s been a very good campaign. It’s not over, but we are sure that we will surpass the 160,000 tonne mark, which is already very good,” Bande said. “This means that, with these new dynamics that we want to be driven by the regulation, we will very quickly be able to reach higher levels. We are convinced that, with these reforms, we will be able to achieve this and overcome it, because the country has great potential for this purpose,” he added, quoted by Mozambique main radio station, Radio Mozambique.
