  • CAC predicts 2025 cashew nut output between 700,000 and 900,000 tonnes

    Jan 13th, 2025

The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) forecasts that the nation’s cashew nut production for the year 2025 will fall within the range of 700,000 to 900,000 tonnes, contingent upon favourable weather conditions. UonSilot, the President of CAC, informed the Khmer Times that if the weather remains conducive, cashew nut output for this year is anticipated to mirror that of 2024. “If the weather conditions prove to be favourable this year, we project that cashew production will range from 700,000 to 900,000 tonnes,” stated Silot. Nonetheless, he expressed concern that climate change may adversely affect this year’s cashew harvest. Silot pointed out that the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) has indicated that rain may occur during the dry season, coinciding with the harvest period, which could potentially diminish yields by 10 to 30 percent. “In light of this, it is imperative that farmers adopt measures in accordance with the association’s guidelines, particularly the organic practices imparted during mid-2024,” Silotemphasised. Recently, CAC released a statement urging cashew growers to conduct regular monitoring of their farms to minimise possible weather-related risks during the 2025 harvest season, which might impact yields. CAC advocates for the implementation of organic practices as a sustainable strategy to combat the effects of climate change. The cashew nut harvest season in Cambodia typically commences in February and concludes in May; however, it is subject to influences such as weather conditions, climate variability, and deficiencies in standard practices for drying and maintenance. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Cambodia ranks third globally in cashew nut cultivation by surface area, with an estimated 580,117 hectares allocated to this crop. Kampong Thom province possesses the largest cultivated area, encompassing approximately 147,700 hectares, followed by Kratie with 102,500 hectares and Ratanakiri with 97,200 hectares. As of this year, Cambodia has produced 850,000 tonnes of cashew nuts, marking an increase of 26.8 percent, and has exported 815,000 tonnes of cashew nuts, a rise of 31 percent. However, exports to Vietnam have remained unchanged at 793,453 tonnes.
