  • GIZ, KOA turn cashew apples into new income stream

    Sep 29th, 2026

A new partnership between German development cooperation (GIZ) and KOA Impact is seeking to create an additional income stream for Ghana’s cashew farmers by turning discarded cashew apples into commercial products. The initiative will process the apples into juice, concentrate, and dried products for local and European markets. The partnership will use KOA’s community mobile processing model to move processing closer to farming communities and produce products for local and international markets. Cashew apples are often left unused after farmers harvest the nuts, but the new project aims to reduce that waste while creating opportunities for farmers, women-led groups, and rural businesses. It will work with smallholder farmers, cooperatives, women’s groups, and farmer organisations to develop processing and market opportunities around the cashew apple. Head of GIZ Ghana’s Private Sector and Innovation Promotion Programme, Arlett Stojanovic, said the initiative was intended to demonstrate how commercial investment could generate development benefits. KOA’s Director of Production and Operations, Daniel Otu, said the company viewed the cashew apple as an untapped raw material with the potential to create another layer of value in Ghana’s cashew industry. It is supported by the development PPP on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The partners say the initiative could create additional income for farmers from the same harvest while opening opportunities for investment, processing, and job creation in the cashew value chain.
