The cashew nut could become Hawaii's newest cash crop. The Department of Agriculture held a presentation for Hawaii farmers in downtown on Wednesday. An expert in cashew cultivation explained why Hawaii's unused farmland may be prime land for the crop.“The most effective land is good for nothing,” said George Paulose, President Ames International. “Is good land for cashews? Because they are a hardy plant which grows in practically very very dry climates.”The state would provide volunteer farmers with cashew seedlings during an 18 month trial Studies would also have to be done regarding environmental concerns. If it all works out, Hawaii would be the only state in the nation to commercially grow cashews.
