The Member of Parliament (MP) for Jaman North, Siaka Stevens has condemned the government for showing apathy towards the plight of cashew farmers in the country. Mr. Siaka Stevens, who was speaking at a public forum at Sampa, the constituency capital, said he recently questioned the Agric Minister in Parliament about why the government was not buying cashew as is being done to shea nut and cocoa, but he could not give him any satisfactory answer. He noted that due to lack of a pricing policy for cashew, some cashew farmers in the Wenchi and Techiman municipalities have formed Associations to negotiate for an agreed price with the buying companies. Sometimes, he continued, the farmers are compelled to accept the prices quoted by the buying companies, because of lack of a pricing policy. The honorable MP told the gathering that he was visiting every community and hamlet just to know their problems and that most of the issues the people are raising is the lack of a pricing policy for cashew and the poor nature of roads within the constituency. He recalled an instance when the Youth of Sampa threatened to embark on a massive demonstration against the government for its neglect of the roads in the Jaman North District, especially that of the capital, Sampa, but the timely intervention of the chiefs, MP and the District Chief Executive made them to postpone it. Mr. Siaka Stevens disclosed that the chiefs within the constituency had agreed to come out with a strongly worded statement for a pricing policy on cashew and on the poor road network within the district very soon.He said as an MP, he would also continue to raise the issue of road on the floor of Parliament and pursue the issue on pricing policy for cashew, in collaboration with his colleague MPs, who are in cashew production areas such as Tain, Banda, Wenchi, Nkoranza, Asunafo North, Techiman and Jaman South. The MP condemned the attack on Chief of Kokoa, Nana Masah, by some NDC members and supporters, when he came out openly to remind the government about the bad nature of roads in the district, saying the comment made by Nana Masah was fair, true and factual. He used that occasion to enumerate some of the major projects, and social intervention he has done within the two years as the Member of Parliament and prayed for the continued support, prayer and unity to ensure more developmental projects.
