  • Tanzania: Samia Vows to Improve Crop Buying

    <p></p><p>Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) presidential running mate Samia Suluhu Hassan has promised to improve the warehouse receipt system and reform cooperatives to work for the interests of the public if her party is chosen to form the incoming government. <br></p> <p>She made the call yesterday at Nyangao village, Mtama constituency, and Likunja village in Ruangwa constituency in Lindi Region. Samia said the cooperatives have been oppressing cashew nut farmers using the warehouse receipt system for their own benefits, which was not government's intention. <br></p> <p>She warned cooperative workers who have been using the system for their own benefit that their days are numbered. "If elected, my government will improve the system and the cooperatives to serve the interests of the public," she pledged. <br></p> <p>"The more we have communities earning more from crops, the more we will have a vibrant national economy. Many have complained about the warehouse receipt system because some cooperatives have been misusing the system. <br></p> <p>This will change as soon as we get elected to form the next government," she said. She said government will revive the cashew nut industry through processing and packaging to add value so that farmers can fetch better prices in both local and international markets. <br></p> <p>"Within one year after taking office, we'll revive all cashew nuts industries. In Mtama constituency, Samia promised to assist the areas get its own district if her party is voted into power. <br></p> <p>"As the vice-president of the Fifth Phase Government I'll help speed up the process so that the constituency can have its own district," she emphasised. In Ruangwa, the presidential running mate also promised that her government will take over development projects and promises not fulfilled by the Fourth Phase Government, including roads and the improvement of the health and water sectors. <br></p> <p>Mtama CCM parliamentary candidate Mr Nape Nnauye said his constituency has 20 wards, stressing that this calls for establishment of a district. He detailed challenges facing his constituency as water, electricity, health, roads and lack of communications. <br></p> <p>In Ruangwa, CCM parliamentary candidate Mr Kassim Majaliwa said 90 percent of the residents in his constituency are cashew nut, sunflower and cassava farmers who face difficulties in transporting their produce because of poor roads. He requested the next government if elected into power to take over and complete projects and promises made by the outgoing government.<br></p><p></p>
