• Mozambique to set up cashew research centre

    Jun 27th, 2012

Mozambique plans to set up a centre for scientific research specialising in the cashew nut production chain, with a view to improving the performance of the different stages of the sub-sector, the director of the National Cashew Institute (Incaju) said recently.According to Mozambican daily newspaper Diário de Moçambique, Filomena Maiopué also said that the centre would be built in the northern province of Nampula and be coordinated by the Mozambique Agrarian Institute (IAM), the Agriculture Ministry’s research arm.During a meeting held in the district of Dondo, in Sofala province, the director of Incaju said that, for that purpose, a Tanzanian consultant had travelled to Mozambique to draw up a design for the centre. The centre will also focus on studying the cashew market with a view to diversifying it rather than depending exclusively on exports to India.

Next season some 3 million cashew saplings will be distributed to producers and cashew exports are expected to total between 75,000 and 80,000 tons.
