The cashew sector in Côte d'Ivoire has asserted itself over the years as a strategic pillar of the country's economy. Built on an area of ​​10 hectares in the commune of Boundiali (Northern Ivorian), precisely in the communal village of Tombougou-samorrosso, this ultra-modern factory, which is almost complete, should generate more than 3,000 direct and indirect jobs. The first magistrate of the municipality of Boundiali, the Minister of National Education and Literacy Mariatou Koné, who went this Saturday, March 4, 2023, to the site to see the level of execution of the project, declared that "the work is progressing as we wish and we are happy with it. » According to the operators, with these 3,000 jobs, this establishment will be "the largest factory" in West Africa in terms of cashew processing. A performance hailed by the socio-anthropologist, Professor Mariatou Koné, initiator of the project. The construction of this factory aims to reduce youth unemployment and to participate in the empowerment of women in the region. It also aims to boost government policy on the processing of raw materials. Cashew nuts have become, for Côte d'Ivoire, the second agricultural export product behind cocoa. The country, the world's largest producer of cashew nuts, has risen to 3rd place in the world among cashew processing countries after Vietnam and India. With a local processing rate that has increased from 9% in 2018 to 21.25% in 2022, the cashew sector has been recording strong growth for several years with a most promising value chain in terms of job creation. Cashew nut production recorded in 2022 stood at 1,028,172 tonnes, up 6% from the previous year, when Côte d'Ivoire achieved 968,676 tonnes. In 2022, the country exported 719,900 tons of raw cashew nuts against 805,748 tons in 2021, mainly to Vietnam and India. For the 2023 marketing campaign, the Ivorian State has set the mandatory minimum farm gate price per kg of raw cashew nuts at 315 FCFA against 305 FCFA for the 2022 campaign, i.e. an increase of 10 FCFA. Gray gold, in Côte d'Ivoire, employs nearly 400,000 producers. The volume of raw nuts processed locally is estimated at 224,036 tons and produced by 27 units, or 21.8% of the total marketed production. The ambition displayed by the Ivorian government is to transform more than 50% of local production by 2030.
