A regional workshop for the restitution of studies on policies and regulations in the cashew sector in West Africa brought together experts, public and private actors, and stakeholders, from January 19 to 20, 2023, at the Hotel Azalaï of Abidjan-Marcory. It was organized by the International Organization for Agricultural Development (Oida), through the West Africa Pro-Cashew Project, in collaboration with the International Cashew Advisory Council (Cicc) and the African Cashew Alliance (Aca). This is to allow industry players from the countries covered by the studies to discuss the results obtained and share their experiences on the topics to be addressed. It focuses on two major axes. In particular, the effectiveness of policies and regulations in the cashew sector in Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria over the past fifteen years. And the policies implemented in the countries concerned for added values to cashew including support for its development. According to Jean-François Guay, head of the Usda West Africa pro-cashew project, the objective is to present the results of the studies to stakeholders in the cashew sector, discuss recommendations, raise awareness and obtain useful information for national decision-makers on the policy, including the policy options and regulatory instruments that are needed to make this policy effective. On this occasion, Dr. Coulibaly Adama, Director General of the Cotton-Cashnut Council of Côte d'Ivoire, representing the Minister of State, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani, welcomed this workshop. “Côte d'Ivoire is honored to have been chosen to host this sub-regional workshop which brings together the major players in the cashew sector in Africa. We have faith that at the end of these two days of exchanges on the results of these studies, we will have solid scientific references capable of guiding us in our decision-makingâ€, rejoiced Dr Coulibaly Adama. At the opening ceremony on January 19, 2023, at the Hotel Azalaï in Marcory, in the presence of the actors, André Tandjiekpon, Executive Secretary of the International Cashew Advisory Council, indicated that policy and regulatory issues around agricultural value chains in general and more particularly at the cashew level are very complex mainly because of their contradictory economic and social issues, including internal geopolitics in the countries. This is why, he believes, with great conviction that their formulation and implementation will be very successful, with rapid impacts, if they are addressed in a larger territorial whole with stakeholders and actors who agree to combine their efforts, means, resources and expertise. Several themes also furnished this meeting, namely “Situation of the world cashew marketâ€; “Causes and Effects/Success and Failure of Policiesâ€; “Analysis of the transformation situation and support for added valueâ€, etc.
