    Jan 23rd, 2023

Nigeria’s cashew output this season is expected to rise due to favourable weather conditions, Daily Independent has gathered. Tola Faseru, President, African Cashew Alliance (ACA), in a telephone interview with Daily Independent said that the current weather condition is favourable and if sustained there will be a good harvest. “We expect that if the weather that we have remain good and continues the way it is and the harmattan is not over extended and the rain also did not come too early, we should have an average production, we should have something reasonable, and so far so good we should be able to maintain our usual or slightly more volume. He said that the world should expect nothing less than 280,000 metric tonnes from Nigeria this year. “The world should be expecting about 280,000 metric tonnes from Nigeria this year. From the little harvest that has taken place, it is quite good,” he said. Faseru noted that international demands last year were affected by the Russian Ukraine war which affected many other consumption products particularly in Europe and America.” Ojo Ajanaku, National President, National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN) said that the weather condition has been very favourable with moderate harmattan. He said the harmattan will definitely help but that the only challenge is that the second harvest might not be the way it used to be. “Definitely the harmattan will help, but the only challenge is that we might not have second harvest the way it used to be; the farmers are very happy that there is going to be bumper harvest this season but their fear is the market,” Ajanaku said that the association will be having the national cashew day which also serves as the cashew flag off in Benin on January 24 which will be followed by a stakeholders meeting on January 25 also in Benin. He stated that the association is also working on developing National Cashew Policy which will be further discussed at the stakeholders meeting. “We are planning for our flag off on January 24. We are working on developing a national cashew policy, like I said we don’t have a policy for the sector and that is not attracting foreign investment, so we are trying to have a national cashew policy. However, Faseru while speaking on processing said that the conference of African Cashew Alliance last year brought about awakening of the need for value addition and also heightening the interest of government. “You will recall that in September last year we have the African Cashew Alliance conference, we have participants from cashew producing countries, it was attended by the Agriculture Minister, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ambassadors, High Commission officers, several Nigerian Banks both development and commercial banks among several other dignities stakeholders. He said that in the conference stakeholders in the cashew industry were given assurance and commitments by the government and the banks and that a lot of interest has been created within the private sector. “I know you are aware of Julius Berger that came into the space, we believe that a lot of other Nigerians and foreign direct investment will be attracted into the sector for processing. “I believe within the next five years the story will change and you will see us doing more processing. We have been given the mandate within the next five year to process at least 50 percent of our production and to double our production, and everybody is running with that mantra. He added that within the next few years, there will be a lot of cashew processing facilities coming up. Nigeria which currently produces about 260,000 metric tonnes annually is the 5th largest cashew producer in the world. Nigeria exports 90 percent of its total production, while 10 percent is processed locally. Cashew producing states in Nigeria include Kaduna, Abia, Kogi, Enugu, Kwara, Oyo, Niger, Imo, and Abuja FCT among others https://independent.ng/
