  • Côte d'Ivoire-AIP / Empowerment of women: Rebecca Yao pleads for multifaceted state support for the association "Diabo, Emerging City" 04/18/2022

    Apr 18th, 2022

The president of the "Diabo, Emerging City" association, Rebecca Yao, pleaded on Saturday April 16, 2022 with the Minister of Communication, Media and Francophonie, Amadou Coulibaly, so that the government can provide multifaceted support to its organization. “We are in a rural area where the primary source of production is land. But today's agriculture is not that of 1960. We need incentives so that women can work effectively. We need tools, machines to till the soil. We also need production, training and financial support infrastructure. And that is all that we are asking from the state authorities, ”she pleaded. The president of the "Diabo, Emerging City" association indicated that the visit to the women's rice-growing perimeter and to the food processing unit (USIFEM) of Diabo in the company of Minister Amadou Coulibaly, aimed to show her what they can do with their hands and at the same time seek support from the State to enable them to "take up the challenge of women's economic empowerment and food security". Rébecca Yao firmly believes that with this material and financial support from the State, her organization, which brings together courageous and enterprising women, will be able to meet the challenge of food self-sufficiency in the Gbêkê region. “There is a lot of talk at the moment about rising prices on the markets. But this inflation is due to the lack of food products. Here we have land, it is raining and we have a water reservoir (dam). We are just asking for a few means to be able to produce as much as possible to become the breadbasket of the Gbêkê region. And so, we can be this growth lever that can serve as a model for the other departments of Côte d'Ivoire,” she argued. The distinguished guest of the association "Diabo, Emerging City" welcomed the initiative taken by the president of this organization which contributes to ensuring the financial empowerment of women in the department of Botro by helping them not only to transform their productions food crops, particularly rice and cassava, but also to find outlets for marketing them. While congratulating her for her dynamism, Minister Amadou Coulibaly urged Rebecca Yao to get in touch with the next government in formation in order to benefit from much greater support from her. "When the new government is formed, it will be able to rely on all the structures that exist at the level of the Ministry of Agriculture as well as that of the fight against poverty or even the Ministry of Women, the Family and the child as well as the FAFCI fund of the First Lady Dominique Ouattara which makes it possible to finance projects led by women", he indicated. Created in 2018, the association "Diabo, Emerging City" is an incubator center for women and young people in rural areas. Its vision is to act for food security and the empowerment of rural women. In the implementation of this vision, she has already helped to create 200 women's cooperatives with 3,300 members across the department of Botro which covers the sub-prefectures of Diabo, Languibonou and Botro. Its area of intervention is agriculture (cashew, rice, cassava, and other food crops), crafts and trade.
