  • Raising awareness in the villages bordering Kaniasso in the face of a greater risk of cashew leakage 03/21/2022

    Mar 21st, 2022

The Odienné regional delegation of the supervisory body for the cashew sector and the monitoring committee for monitoring the marketing of Kaniasso, joining their efforts, are increasing awareness-raising activities for producers in the villages of the department located at the border with neighboring Mali, in a context of heightened risk of product leakage. The inhabitants of these villages, because of their geographical position, live more than elsewhere the temptation to direct their production towards this neighboring State for a greater financial gain. Because the farm gate purchase price offered on the other side is more advantageous (around 400 F CFA/kg against 305 F, officially, in Côte d'Ivoire). Also buyers from Mali criss-cross these villages irregularly. More than seven tons of cashew have already been seized in the Folon on their way to Mali, according to the local cashew cotton delegation. Six tricycles loaded with 60 bags (about six tons) were stopped on Saturday March 12, 2022, in the Mahandiana-Sokourani sub-prefecture (Kaniasso department). A few days earlier, 18 bags (more than 1.5 tons) had been seized in Tiéfenzo (sub-prefecture of Kimbirila Nord, department of MInignan). The cashew cotton delegation and the departmental monitoring committee of Kaniasso thus go into contact with farmers in border villages to convince them to prioritize the national interest over personal gain. The prefect of Kaniasso, Rolland Akpa, president of the departmental committee led one of these missions which criss-crossed, Saturday March 3, 2022, the villages of Touroudjo, Tahara and Kouroulégué. The villages of Zambla, Ouéli, Ouayéré, and Sokouraba also received emissaries from the monitoring committee and the delegation. At each stage, local producers were reminded of the need to also help the State to have the necessary resources (including those drawn from taxes on the export of cashew nuts) to finance the development of the Côte d' Ivory for the benefit of all. Côte d'Ivoire is still faced with the problem of the flight of its cashew production to neighboring states. During a press conference in February 2020, the director general of the cotton and cashew council, Adama Coulibaly, said that between 150,000 and 200,000 tonnes of cashew nuts are fraudulently leaving the country, equivalent to nearly 17 billion FCFA of shortfall for the State. The 2022 cashew campaign opened on February 4, 2022 with a mandatory floor price on the farm gate set at 305 FCFA/Kg. This purchase price is now around 400 F in production areas due to the market trend, displaying a demand that still supplants supply. Côte d'Ivoire is aiming for a production of 1,040,000 tons of cashew nuts. This would represent almost 1/4 of world production. The country produced 968,676 tons of cashew nuts, an increase of 14% compared to the year 2020 which had recorded a production of 848,700 tons. The regional cotton and cashew delegation of Odienné officially produced 94,659 cashew nuts in 2021. Four regions make up the delegation, namely Kabadougou, Folon, Bafing, Tonkpi for a total of 11 departments. The Folon, out of the total of 94,659 tonnes marketed in the area in 2021, supplied 15,909 tonnes.
