  • Concerned about world political instability, the cashew industry asked to reduce its export quota 03/03/2022

    Mar 3rd, 2022

On the evening of February 28, 2022, talking with PV Lao Dong, Chairman of the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) - Mr. Pham Van Cong, said: Although the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) assigned the cashew industry to plan to export cashew nuts. imports $3.8 billion in 2022, however, the current world political situation is volatile, affecting the global economy, specifically the war between Russia and Ukraine will affect the global economy. , especially the economy in European countries - which is a large cashew export market of Vietnam, it is difficult for the cashew industry to achieve the target that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has assigned from the end of 2021 to the beginning of 2022. Previously, at the work review in 2021, implementing the plan for 2022 in early January, Vinacas was very optimistic about cashew exports in 2022, because with the cashew nut export turnover in 2021 reaching a record level. With a record of USD 3.64 billion, the cashew industry has high expectations for cashew trade in 2022, although the forecast is still difficult due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic. Vinacas has also set a goal that in 2022, cashew exports will bring in $3.8 billion, fulfilling the target assigned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. However, by the end of February 2022, the situation of COVID-19 epidemic in the country became more complicated, the political situation in the world, especially in Europe (EU) was likely to be more unstable when conflicts between Russia and Ukraine are very tense, Mr. Cong said, it is necessary to consider the export quota of cashew in this context. “In cashew exports, the EU market accounts for about 35% of output. Currently, if the political conflict between Russia and Ukraine is prolonged or continues to be unstable, it will greatly affect cashew nut exports in 2022, so it is necessary to reduce the target to a level suitable to the actual situation. Vinacas Chairman Pham Van Cong informed. Mr. Pham Van Cong said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development assigned the export target of USD 3.8 billion to Vinacas at that time when there was no new political situation in Europe and the world, but now, the situation is different. The target of USD 3.8 billion is difficult to achieve for the reasons mentioned above. “The Vinacas Information Council met and determined that, with political developments in the world being very complicated, it was impossible to predict future risks. Therefore, Vinacas will make a written request to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to adjust the cashew nut export plan in 2022 from $3.8 billion to 3.2 billion in 2022. If by mid-2022, the world situation will be stable. In order to determine and consume better cashew nuts, Vinacas will continue to adjust with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to suit the actual situation "- Mr. Pham Van Cong informed. According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), after the US, the EU is currently the second largest cashew export market of Vietnam, accounting for 23% of the total volume and 22% of the total export value of the whole industry. Vietnam's cashew exports now have a market share in 23 EU member markets. In particular, Germany and the Netherlands are currently important trade hubs because these two markets both import for domestic consumption and re-export to other markets in the bloc.
