  • Cashew: Côte d'Ivoire aims for a production of 1.04 million tons in 2022

    Feb 15th, 2022

Côte d'Ivoire, the world's largest producer of cashew nuts, officially launched the cashew nut marketing campaign for the year 2022 on Friday, targeting 1.04 million tonnes against 968,676 tonnes recorded in 2021. The Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) and the Managing Director of the Cotton and Cashew Council, the regulatory body for these two sectors, presented the challenges of the marketing campaign for the year 2022, during a press conference, at the Caistab, in the Plateau, the business center of Abidjan. Côte d'Ivoire produced 968,676 tonnes in 2021 against 848,700 tonnes in 2020 and is targeting 1.04 million tonnes for the 2022 campaign. Set for February 4, the campaign is officially open. Mr. Hyacinthe Ouattara, the PCA, assured that concerning "the prospects for the 2022 campaign, the production looks good. The projections are 1,040,000 tons of cashew nuts and 17% of this volume, i.e. 180,000 tons should be processed locally". For the 2022 marketing campaign, the mandatory floor price is set at 305 FCFA/Kg for producers. The compulsory floor price in the interior store is 330 Fcfa/Kg, that of the factory store at 359 Fcfa/Kg against 389 Fcfa/Kg the compulsory floor price for the port store. The country still maintains its rank as world leader in terms of production and export with 805,748 tonnes exported. This testifies to the success of its cashew nut processing policy. Côte d'Ivoire is the first cashew processing country in Africa and the third in the world in 2021 with 136,854 tons processed, a result due to the policy of the Cotton-Cashew Council. According to the Director General of the Cotton-Cashew Council, Dr. Adama Coulibaly, the regulatory body has deposited a guarantee in banks in the amount of 5.20 billion CFA francs, which has enabled processors to raise 15.860 billion CFA francs for the purchase of raw material. In addition, a processing subsidy is granted to manufacturers. Dr. Adama Coulibaly said that since the implementation of this subsidy, the Council has already disbursed 28 billion CFA francs for the benefit of processors. The Ivorian government has offered an agreement to investors. Once signed, this entitles them to credits in addition to tax advantages and imported equipment depending on the ownership of the capital, specific advantages granted when it is more than 40% Ivorian. This year, the industrial areas of Bondoukou (East) and Korogho (North) will already be supplied. Côte d'Ivoire is making every effort to massively invest in processing to create more added value in cashews. The 2021 campaign was characterized by relative price stability, compared to recent campaigns. This relative stability is linked to a minimum price level and better border surveillance. The production of raw cashew nuts marketed the previous year is 968,676 tons against 848,700 tons in 2020 and 634,631 tons in 2019, an increase of 14% from 2020 to 2021 and 26% on average from 2019 to 2021 . The Cotton-Cashew Council notes that compliance with the minimum farm gate price, set at 305 FCFA, has allowed a 14% increase in the income of cashew producers, from 297 billion FCFA distributed in the sector in 2020 to 339 billion FCFA in 2021.
