In 2021, Vietnam's cashew industry will face many difficulties due to the complicated developments of the global Covid-19 epidemic and high logistics costs.

Pham Van Cong, Chairman of the Vietnam Cashew Association (VINACAS), said that in the past two years, due to the Covid-19 epidemic spreading around the world, VINACAS and cashew businesses could not organize promotional activities. , market research and development; especially the market for deeply processed products. Therefore, cashew nut production and export is still mainly based on existing markets and customers.

The lack of ships, the lack of containers, and the high freight rates when importing goods from Vietnam have made European and American importers more interested in importing cashew kernels from cashew processing factories in Africa, especially with cashew nuts. Shipments that need immediate delivery, due to lower prices, closer transport distances, less risk of delay, delay in delivery.

Although the number of cashews imported from Africa is not large compared to the quantity imported from Vietnam, this is a matter of concern because African cashew processing enterprises will have more opportunities to open up business in the near future. expand exports to these two most important markets of Vietnam's cashew industry.

On the other hand, the high freight rates cause importers to consider and calculate to balance the freight, so they often find ways to force the price of cashew kernels.

In that context, cashew nut processing and exporting enterprises still make efforts to maintain production and ensure supply, despite the complicated developments of the 4th Covid-19 wave.

In addition, new generation FTAs help Vietnam's cashew industry to boost exports to key and potential markets such as EU member markets, Russia, Canada, UK, Japan... Notably, the cashew industry Vietnam maintains export growth to the US market, the largest and most important export market.

Information from the General Department of Customs shows that Vietnam's cashew exports in November reached 50.7 thousand tons, worth 329.86 million USD. Accumulated in the first 11 months of 2021, cashew nut exports reached approximately 531.5 thousand tons, worth 3.34 billion USD, up 14.4% in volume and 14.7% in value over the same period last year. 2020.

In the first half of December, the cashew industry continued to export more than 24 thousand tons of cashew nuts, worth 150 million USD. From the beginning of the year to mid-December, cashew exports reached 555 thousand tons, worth approximately 3.5 billion USD.

With the above export data, in 2021, the cashew industry will reach a new record in terms of cashew exports. Previously, the highest amount of cashew exports was recorded in 2020 with 515 thousand tons. Not only that, the export of cashew nuts in 11 months has exceeded 30,000 tons compared to the plan set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for the cashew industry in 2021 to export 525 thousand tons.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), with the results achieved in the first 11 months of 2021, it is likely that cashew nut exports this year will exceed the set target of 3.6 billion USD.

This assessment is completely grounded because by mid-December, the export value of cashew nuts has reached 3.5 billion USD. In the first half of December, cashew nut exports brought in 150 million USD, in the remaining half of the month, the cashew industry can completely achieve an export value of more than 100 million USD or more, thereby, bringing exports five times. First, it surpassed the $3.6 billion mark, and also surpassed the cashew nut export turnover achieved in 2017 of $3,514 billion.

Men's results in 2021 are two halves of life
Organic cashew orchard of Truecoop Organic Cashew Cooperative, Ninh Thuan. Information from the General Department of Customs shows that the average export price of Vietnam's cashew nuts in November 2021 reached $6,505/ton, down 1.6% compared to October 2021, but up 6.0% compared to October 2021. November 2020. In the first 11 months of 2021, Vietnam's average export price of cashew nuts reached $6,288/ton, up 0.2% over the same period in 2020.

Keeping the raw material area stable
Up to this point, it can be affirmed that cashew nut exports in 2021 have had an impressive growth in both volume and value, thereby helping Vietnam continue to maintain its position as a cashew exporter. 1 in the world since 2006 until now.

However, in the opposite direction, raw cashew imports in 2021 increased dramatically in both volume and value. It shows that, although the domestic production of raw cashew nuts currently only meets about 1/5 of the processing capacity of the cashew industry, maintaining and stabilizing domestic cashew production is still very important in terms of production. helping the cashew industry to be somewhat proactive in the source of good quality raw materials.

Tran Van Hiep, Vice President and Head of the Trade Promotion Department of VINACAS, said that due to Vietnam's limited land fund, cashew trees have to compete fiercely with many other key export industrial crops such as coffee. , rubber, pepper, fruit trees ..., so the strategy of Vietnam's cashew industry is to maintain the existing area and increase the yield and quality of cashew nuts by technical advances.

With the support of the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the cashew industry is constantly researching to improve farming methods; select good varieties for production, meet the needs of processing and export well, and renovate and replant old cashew areas appropriately. Especially, the close cooperation between processors and farmers to develop local raw material areas to ensure quality.

The cashew industry is also moving towards organic production and good production practices, practice programs to reduce post-harvest losses in raw cashew production...

In addition, the cashew industry has increased cooperation with Cambodian partners to develop the cashew area in Cambodia, aiming for an output of 1 million tons of raw cashew nuts as expected by the Cambodian Government in the shortest time.

Regarding processing, in the coming period, the cashew industry will focus on deep processing and diversifying export products as well as developing the domestic market with 100 million people of Vietnam. This is a very potential market, which can support the consumption of 100% of domestically produced cashews.

According to the Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the structure of Vietnam's cashew exports in general will fluctuate in 2021. In addition to focusing on exporting the main types of cashew nuts W320 and W240, Vietnam's cashew industry pushes strong exports of high-value cashew nuts such as W180 cashews.

W180 cashew nut is the cashew nut with the highest growth rate in the first 10 months of 2021, up 43.4% in volume and 56% in value over the same period in 2020, reaching approximately 15 thousand tons, worth approximately 15 thousand tons. for $127 million.

In which, China is the main export market of W180 cashew nuts, reaching 7.74 thousand tons, worth 61.21 million USD, up 33.7% in volume and 53.2% in value over the same period. period 2020; followed by the Israeli market with a volume of 1.61 thousand tons, worth 15.3 million USD, up 65.5% in volume and 59.3% in value.

The average export price of W180 cashews reached US$8,515/ton in the first 10 months of 2021, up 8.8% over the same period in 2020. In which, the average export price of W180 cashews to some markets was at a high level. such as: Canada reached 13,666 USD/ton; Spain reached 11,463 USD/ton; Hong Kong reached 11,264 USD/ton; Greece reached 10,814 USD/ton.
