A meeting was held in the committee room of the Deputy Chief Minister&#39;s office to discuss the problems faced by the farmers while cultivating cashew. The meeting was presided over by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar while Agriculture Minister Dadaji Bhuse, Cooperation Minister Balasaheb Patil, Horticulture Minister Sandipan Bhumare, Minister of State for Horticulture Aditi Tatkare and MLA Shekhar Nikam were present.</p> <p>Instructions to Konkan University to develop varieties<br /> The Deputy Chief Minister gave instructions to develop varieties with a view to increase the production of cashew. Balasaheb Sawant was given to the Vice Chancellor of Konkan Agricultural University, Dr. Sanjay Sawant. If varieties are developed, it will further help in increasing the production. He also reviewed the problems faced by the farmers while cultivating cashew at the local level. During this, Registrar of the University Dr. Bharat Salvi Maharashtra State Co-op Cashew Prof. Federation President Dhananjay Yadav, Mithilesh Desai, Khalgaon Cashew Liquor and Pankaj Dalvi, Director, Cashew Growers Cooperative Society were present.</p> <p>According to agriculture sector experts, cashew is cultivated on 1.91 lakh hectare area in Maharashtra. Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Palghar, Kolhapur and Sangli districts are famous for this. Whereas the area under this crop in the whole country is 10.10 lakh hectare, in which 7.45 lakh metric tonnes is produced. Cashew is a major foreign exchange earning crop.</p>
