  • 99% of Cambodian cashews are exported to Vietnam 10/60/2021

    Oct 6th, 2021

The massive influx of Cambodian agricultural products into Vietnam is generally unfavorable, putting pressure on the output of our country's agricultural products. As for cashews, the story is different. Currently, Cambodia has more than 500,000 hectares of cashew plantations in 10 provinces, with lush gardens and abundant output. In the first eight months of 2021, Cambodia exported 869,540 tons of raw cashew nuts to Vietnam, accounting for 99.2% of the country's total cashew exports. The above-mentioned amount is equal to 58.3% of the total amount of cashew nuts imported by Vietnam in 2020, making the import volume of this item in the first eight months of 2021 unusually high. The unusually high import level has made Vietnam go from a trade surplus to cashew nut in the past 31 years, to now become a trade deficit, and at the same time, it also raises the question of businesses dodging taxes… Even so, the phenomenon of "massively" importing cashew nuts It is not worrisome from the perspective that this is the processing material of Vietnam's cashew industry. Cashew nut is one of the key export items in the group with a turnover of 1 billion USD/year or more, ranking third among nine items of the group of agricultural and aquatic products. Vietnam is firmly in the group of three leading countries in terms of cashew nut exports. But due to the encroachment from planting, tending, processing, to export of the cashew industry, the effect has not been as expected. In 2020, cashew nut exports were US$3.21 billion, compared with 2019, a decrease of 2.3% in turnover, while the quantity increased by 13% because the average export price decreased by 13.6%. In the chain of care, the ingredients always come first. It is said that among the cashew nuts imported into Vietnam from the country of pagodas and pagodas, there is a part that comes from Vietnamese businesses that come to invest in cooperation. However, even without that, a large source of raw cashew nuts from neighboring countries, crossing the border, immediately "capital" of cashew processing in the southern provinces of our country, is advantageous to foresee, less waiting. from Africa, the sea and the sky are far away. Due to the extreme climate, erratic weather changes, the proliferation of pests and diseases, the degeneration of varieties, the techniques of planting, caring and harvesting are not correspondingly invested, together with farmers running after the mentality of the crowd, jealousy race to plant, cut down together ..., so the cashew acreage in recent years has decreased continuously from nearly 450,000 hectares to just over 300,000 hectares, leading to a decline in the output of raw cashew nuts and a decline in quality, only meet 20% of processing capacity. This makes exporting cashew nut processing enterprises have to manage to take advantage of capacity and meet orders. Since 2005, Vietnam has been one of the world's largest raw cashew import markets, from 25 countries, of which Ivory Coast accounted for 36%. However, due to multiple sources of imports, everyone imports heavily, leading to uneven quality of raw materials. More dangerously, many shipments of raw cashew nuts from Africa have been found to have beetles. This is the most dangerous insect among its comrades and is put on strict quarantine lists by countries, while our containment network is thin, so the beetle is easy to infect and spread. in Vietnam. Africa is currently the world's largest raw cashew production area, accounting for 60% of global production, while the entire continent's cashew processing capacity has not consumed 10% of output. Currently, the country that is selling raw cashew nuts to us has woken up and turned to processing instead of exporting raw nuts, so sooner or later this supply will be less. Meanwhile, Vietnam's cashew nut processing capacity has been renovated and technology has advanced rapidly. Since 2006, many delegations from India, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Mozambique, Tanzania... have come to Vietnam to learn about this new technology, some customers have offered to buy. However, the processing of our cashew nuts is still inadequate, the product is monotonous, eaten directly in the form of nuts, lacks many products from raw materials to be processed into specialties, high-class, satisfying many tastes. . Even the above-mentioned monotonous products, because many factories make from uneven source of raw materials, it is difficult to control the quality even in a single shipment, and only brand name... self-styled. Therefore, there is no large, stable volume, to meet long-term orders, for "big" customers.Vietnam's cashew nut exports to many markets, notably the US, Australia, the European Union (EU), China... The European - American - Australian markets are far away, and technical barriers are tight. The road to neighboring China is short but troublesome as is often the case with other agricultural products for export, with each batch of fire one type, each batch scrutinized in a different way. The difficulty is that, but the market demand is still large, so the market space is still booming. All efforts are urgently needed, in which the key with cashew nuts is to remove the knot from the input of raw materials. Although raw cashew nuts from Cambodia are considered to be massively imported, but they are substitutes for sources from Africa, so it is not a worry but this supply can be expected to contribute to improving inputs for cashew nut processing and export. the border will be smooth. That is, the road is close and the quantity is large, relatively stable and the prices and fees are comfortable… Of course, it is still necessary to innovate the processes, regulations, rules, administration, and support for the cashew industry to reach new heights.
