A factory for processing cashew nuts is under construction in the Nangade district of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, as part of a donation provided by the Indian government, Mozambican newspaper NotÃcias reported.Melchior Focas, the administrator of Nangade district, told the newspaper that construction of the factory would, as well as creating jobs, have the additional advantage of sparing producers from crossing the Rovuma river in order to sell their cashews in neighbouring Tanzania.

Nangade district, which has over 1.8 million cashew trees according to a count carried out in 2011, is located on the banks of the Rovuma river on the border with Tanzania and is seen as the largest cashew producer in Cabo Delgado province.According to Focas, for the current cashew sales campaign Nangade produced 7,100 tons of cashew nuts, as compared to 6,600 tons set as a target by the National Cashew Institute (Incaju). He said that not all the cashews produced in the district were sold inside the country and that many were sent across the border to feed processing factories in Tanzania. However, this trend of selling cashews in the neighbouring country had been falling back in the last while as a result of price stability within the Mozambican market.
