• Tanzania: Extension Workers Need Training to Revive Cashew Industry

    May 5th, 2015

THOUGH in terms of global production Tanzania has so far recorded a milestone in cashew growing, ranking fourth after India, Nigeria and Brazil, there is potential for the crop doing better. The country is known as centre of excellence for cashew research in Africa, but the annual cashew production for the last 10 years has been fluctuating; with production ranging between 65,000 tonnes and 120,000 tonnes, according to Cashewnut Board of Tanzania (CBT Report, 2010)."It is agreeable that there is adequate knowledge and technology in cashew. But whereas the provision was expected to contribute positively to gradual yield increase, it has not been the case" says Dr Peter Masawe, a Principal Investigator at the Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) in Mtwara. In a paper authored by him and delivered at the Second International Cashew Conference in Kampala Uganda, the researcher said the extension services offered in Tanzania, appeared to be ill-equipped to be able to effectively transfer available technology to beneficiaries - small scale farmers.
