• Tanzania: Tandahimba Cashew Farmers Call for Crop Tax Reduction

    Nov 29th, 2014

CCM Secretary General, Mr Abdulrahman Kinana, has lambasted Tandahimba District authorities over a big number of taxes on cashew growers, thus denying them with maximum profits.

Addressing a political rally here on Thursday evening, Mr Kinana, said taxing cashew growers over ten types of levy leave them with meagre profits of their works, saying multiple taxes discourage the cashew nuts growers.

"The district authorities should ensure the cashew nuts growers enjoy the utmost profits of their agricultural activities," said the CCM Secretary General, who is on tour to the district to inspect the implementation of the ruling party's election manifesto for 2010- 2015.

Mr Kinana hailed the Tandahimba- Newala Cooperative Union (TANECU) on the plans to construct a mega cashew nuts processing factory in the district, saying the factory would facilitate the development of the district. "Other cooperative unions should emulate TANECU for constructing its own cashew nuts processing factory. We should discourage exporting raw cashew nuts so that the country benefits from the cash crop," he said. Earlier, TANECU Manager, Mr Yusuph Nanila, said the cashew nuts processing factory with production capacity of 30,000 tones of the products per year would provide the cash crop growers with reliable market.

"The factory will also provide both women and men with employment opportunities. This will improve social development," he said. Mr Nanila said apart from processing cashew nuts the factory would also produce cashew fruits juice, hence to expand the scope of the income sources for the cashew growers.

He noted that the cooperative union would also establish cashew modal farm to be owned by the factory, saying TANECU has already acquired 200 hectres of land in Tandahimba for the project. Reports suggest that over 90 per cent of the raw cashew nuts are exported to Kerala state in India for processing. The move denies the farmers with maximum profits from the cash crops.
