• Coast RC: Selling cashew nut without using warehouse receipt unlawful

    Oct 12th, 2014

The Coast Regional Commissioner, Mwantumu Mahiza has warned cashew nut growers to sale their nuts using warehouse receipts system in the 2014/15 buying season failing which legal actions will be instituted against them. The RC sounded the warning amid rumours that some growers in the region had refused to use the system until Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) paid their Sh1billion outstanding debt of 2011/2012 buying season.

She said the demand by growers would have been presented during a recent stakeholders meeting that convened in Kibaha to discuss among others the importance of using the system, which was accepted. “Cashew nut growers are deceitful hypocrite, and not good for the regional development. This makes the region to lag behind in different development projects” she said.

She said the system aims at ensuring that more cashew nut growers benefit from their produce and guarantee timely payments allowing authorities to easily collect duty tax that would later lead to improvements of various infrastructures development projects in school buildings, laboratories, dormitories and buying of desks.

Recently, a grower in Mkuranga district, Abdallah Namanguku alias Dula Papai alleged to represent other growers in the region refused to use the newly warehouse receipt system claiming that they want individual businessmen allowed to buy their nuts. He claimed that last cashew, individual businessmen raised the nuts price to Sh1,300/- a kilo, for an A grade nuts while a B grade fetched Sh1,100/- per kilo against authority’s directive prices of Sh1,000/- per kilo for an A grade and Sh800/- per kilo for grade B nuts.

Namanguku accompanied by his colleague, Omari Hamis Ibrahim said in Manzese Tip top area in Dar es salaam on Thursday that they would not agree to use the system until AMCOS pays then the Sh1billion outstanding bills.

The three growers also raised concern for the system to be applied only in cashew nuts, leaving out other crops like simsim to be bought locally.

In 2010, the government announced cashew nut growers to use the warehouse receipts system where all cashew nut cooperatives would be required to send the entire crop to the government’s godown for auction.
