Almond production hit $468 million in 2013, moving the crop from fourth place in 2012 — when almonds generated $322 million — to the top spot. The figures are included in the 2013 Annual Agricultural Report prepared by the San Joaquin County Agricultural Commissioner. The report was presented to county supervisors this week by Gary Caseri, interim county ag commissioner.

The increase in almond orchards, especially in the Tracy area, coupled with a major boost in the price to growers, have been given as the reasons for almonds leading all other agricultural activities in gross dollar volume last year. Right behind almonds in revenue-generation for 2013 was the county’s other major nut crop, walnuts, which recorded gross revenue of $442.7 million in 2013, although slightly lower than $457 million a year earlier.

Almonds and walnuts accounted for 117,000 acres (180 square miles) of the agricultural acreage in San Joaquin County in 2013, according to the report. And many more producing acres, especially almonds, are expected to be reported a year from now.

Total 2013 agricultural production in San Joaquin County hit $2,921,828,000, slightly less than a 1 percent increase over the previous year’s total of $2,893,783,000.

Other 2013 crop-revenues for crops of local interest (with 2012 totals in parenthesis): grapes, $441 million ($549 million); and tomatoes, $102 million ($103 million).
