Media player: "Space" to play, "M" to mute, "left" and "right" to seek. The Australian Nut Industry Council said the almond industry makes up one third of the total value of the Australian nut industry. Council chairman Jolyon Burnett said the industry would increase its export value in the next few years and almonds were currently the leading exported variety. "It is the single largest exporter among all the nuts and represents over a third of the total value of the Australian nut industry so it's definitely the one driving the growth," he said.

"We're fairly confident the trade value of the Australian tree nut industry will top a billion dollars by the end of this year and if those sorts of growth trends continue it will easily surpass a billion dollars in export by the end of this decade. "Almonds globally have seen their production double but their value triple and that story is repeated petty much across pecans, walnuts and pistachios."
