• 3 lakh cashew saplings to be planted in State

    Feb 1st, 2019

High-yielding H-130 variety

Three lakh cashew saplings of high-yielding H-130 variety will be distributed in the State through the Kerala State Agency for the expansion of Cashew Cultivation (KSACC), Minister for Cashew Industry J. Mercykutty Amma has said. The Directorate of Cashew Research at Mangalapuram under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will supply the plants.

Though the plants will start flowering within a year, flowers will be removed in the first year for maximising productivity. From the third year, the plants will start yielding and since the plants are short it will be easy for the farmers to harvest the crop. The hybrid variety will yield nuts weighing 12-13 grams and around 400-600 saplings can be planted on an acre of land. The total yield from one acre will be 800-1,200 kg.

Three-year subsidy
The KSACC will give scientific training in planting to farmers and each plant will be given a three-year subsidy. The project is part of an intensive drive to produce sufficient raw cashew nuts to meet the demand of the domestic market.
