<p>On the occasion of the national day of peace, the Ivorian government organizes today, a planting operation of a million trees throughout the country under the theme: " I pledge for a Côte d'Ivoire greener. I plant my tree, "said the government statement. The opportunity for the Ministry of Water and Forests to highlight this initiative through a campaign clipextremely touching. While the country held 16 million hectares at the beginning of 1960, the forest spread over 3 million hectares in 2018. This is a loss of 80% of the forest cover in half -century. " This day dedicated to peace and social cohesion will also be the occasion to launch a call for the mobilization of all social strata to act [...] with a view to restoring forest cover, " reads. Of the one million trees planted, 400,000 of them should be planted in the district of Abidjan, along the main roads, in public spaces, on the wharves, etc. </p><p>Last year an event of the same kind was carried out under the theme "A tree for peace", during which 500 trees were planted along the road of the airport in the commune of Port-Bouët, on a stretch from 3 km. Recall that the world's largest producer of cocoa and cashews suffers the backdrop of extensive agriculture which is the main cause of deforestation in the country, plus the abuse of exported timber, processed into coal, and the difficulty for the Ivorian State to enforce the laws that protect forests.</p> <p>The government has developed in 2018 a new forest management policy whose objective is to rebuild 3 million hectares of forests by 2030 and an envelope of FCFA 616 billion over 10 years (Read: FCFA 616 billion to save the forest in Ivory Coast ). Thus, the government works to plant 35,000 hectares of trees per year, an initiative supported by various programs such as "Planting a tree for peace", "I plant a tree for a greener Côte d'Ivoire", "A citizen, a tree" and "A school, 5 hectares of forest".</p> Earlier in 2013, Côte d'Ivoire was engaging in the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Program (FLEGT). In addition, a government seminar for the preservation of the forest was carried out on May 17, 2018. A year later, on June 20, 2019, the new forest code came into force (Read: New Forest Code in Côte d'Ivoire ), and defined a legal framework for the management of Ivorian forests. <br><p></p>
