• The 2020 cashew marketing campaign opened in Burkina

    Mar 8th, 2020

The structuring of the cashew sector in Burkina Faso is continuing. The 2020 cashew nut marketing campaign in the land of upright men began on Saturday February 29, in Orodara, under the theme "Sustainable development of the cashew sector in Burkina Faso: challenges and prospects for regulation" with a fixed price on the field at FCFA 330 per kilogram. The government intends to take advantage of this campaign to clean up the national market, ensure product quality and structure the cashew sector in the country, said a press release from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Handicrafts.

First, the government intends to use the money collected between 2018 and January 6, 2020 to consolidate the sector. This is a levy on exports of raw cashew nuts in the order of FCFA 25 / kg, which brought in close to FCFA 5.7 billion (€ 8.7 million). Secondly, thanks to the money collected, the State set up the Burkina Faso Cashew Council (CBA) - operational since last October 30 - this is a public establishment of an economic nature intended to support actors in the sector, and intended to structure the country's cashew sector (Read: Cajou: creation of the Burkina Faso cashew council in Burkina Faso) .

“In terms of regulation, I can assure you that things will change this year. Actors who buy goods on the field and who do not respect commercial regulations will be tracked down and will be held accountable for their actions, ” Trade Minister Harouna Kaboré told LeFaso.net . Indeed, this will be the third point, a mobile brigade of economic control and the repression of fraud (BMCRF) will be responsible for ensuring compliance with economic regulations and asks everyone to help the hundred or so agents present on the field, to call the Ouagadougou toll-free number (80 00 11 84/85) or that of Bobo-Dioulasso (80 00 11 86) available 24 hours a day.

Cashew is the third agricultural export product of Burkina Faso (after cotton and sesame). It is therefore a product with high economic potential, which generated FCFA 117.11 billion (€ 178 million) in 2018 against FCFA 99.56 billion (€ 151.5 million) in 2017. Each year, 45,000 households produce on 255,000 hectares (ha) nearly 100,000 tonnes (t) of cashew. More specifically, production reached 95,000 tonnes in 2019, up 11.8% compared to 2018. Admittedly, the transformation is still timid but it is progressing. From 5,000 tonnes in 2017, it climbed to 9,000 tonnes in 2019. In addition, it mobilizes nearly 11,000 direct jobs, 92% of which are women.
