  • Unfulfilled Promises Leave Cashew Industry Underdeveloped

    <p></p><p>The twin towns of Palasa and Kasibugga are famous for quality cashew. Cashew orchards are spread across every mandal--Palasa, Mandasa and Vajrapukothur--in the constituency. The cashew from Palasa, which is exported not only to other parts of the country but all over the world, has scope of development into a major agro-industry but no efforts have been made to upgrade it.</p> <p>The main crop of the constituency is cashew and over a lakh people depend directly or indirectly on the crop. Before every election, candidates have been assuring the setting of a cashew research centre in Palasa besides sops for cashew farmers. Both, the Central and the state governments, had announced the setting up of the research centre but the proposal has been confined to papers. </p><p>People residing in the jurisdiction of the Palasa municipality face acute drinking water crisis. The promises made by governments and elected representatives to set up an off shore reservoir to tackle the problem have been unfulfilled. The repair of existing water sources like the main canal of Vamsadhara river and construction of reservoirs for storing waters from Harisagaram, Jagannadhasagaram and Varahalagedda. </p><p>Kidney diseases are rampant in the constituency like Ichapuram. Though research and studies have been taken up, no measures have been taken up to prevent it from spreading further. The people of the constituency have been demanding the setting up of a bridge on Upputeru near Nuvvarareveu village and another one near Pudilanka bridge. Contestants during the past three elections have made promises regarding the bridges but no progress has been seen in the regard. </p><p>The promise of granting SC status to the fishermen community has been an unfulfilled one and is expected to be a major factor in the elections as majority of voters in the constituency belong to the fishermen community.<br></p><p></p>
