<p></p><p>After experiencing its most deficient rainfall in six years in 2015, Goa is expected to receive above normal rainfall during the fast-approaching monsoon season. Meteorology department officials have predicted that the state will receive around six per cent rainfall above the amount normally experienced in Goa. <br></p> <p>"The El Nino phenomenon that was hovering for the last two years, is weakening. This is expected to bring six per cent rainfall over and above the normal rainfall expected in Goa in 2016," Goa meteorology department official N Haridasan said. Total seasonal rainfall of 2971.7mm (116.9 inches) is considered normal for the state. <br></p> <p>Last year, the total rainfall could not even touch the 'magic' 100-inch mark, crawling and adding up to only 2,388.6mm (94.3 inches). It turned out to be the state's poorest monsoon in six years with a deficit as high as 20%. <br></p> <p>Until the deficit in 2015, Goa had been experiencing sufficient rainfall. In 2010, the surplus was 21%, while above-normal rainfall, of about 14%, in 2013 also made that season a fairly wet one. Even in 2014, the monsoon turned out to be normal with a modest surplus of 3%. <br></p> <p>The highest surplus of 29% was recorded in 2011. Rainfall greater than 19% excess of the total rainfall is considered surplus. <br></p> <p>With an above-normal rainfall expected in 2016, Goa can look forward to a good paddy crop. It will also prove beneficial for newly-planted saplings of cashew, mango and other horticulture crops.<br></p><p></p>
