  • Ivorian cashew producers call for the establishment of an inter-professional organization

    Apr 18th, 2020

Actors from the cashew sector in Côte d'Ivoire, united within the Economic Interest Group of Cashew Producers (GIE-PROCACI), call for an audit of the sector and the establishment of an Interprofessional Agricultural Organization (OIA) ). In a note addressed to the Minister of Agriculture and Sustainable Development, the GIE-PROCACI requests an "audit" of the sector for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 campaigns; and the completion of the sector reform structures which should lead to the establishment of an Interprofessional Agricultural Organization (OIA) for the cashew sector. The GIE-PROCACI, which cries out for its “dissatisfaction” , calls for producers to be taken into account in all decisions concerning the sector, particularly marketing. The group also recalls that the conclusions of the Grand-Bassam workshop of October 29, 30 and 31, 2018 had provided for and reassured the establishment, by December 2019, of the Interprofessional Agricultural Organization. For the 2020 campaign, the GIE-PROCACI notes that the government has set the guaranteed price for the Kg of cashews at 400 CFA francs, however "the product is sold at between 200 and 100 CFA francs" . In addition, "since 2019, with the support of the Cotton Cashew Council, funds have been granted to exporters gathered in GIE-GEPPA and renewed in 2020, without the other actors being taken into account" , deplore the producers. In addition, in 2019, the State of Côte d'Ivoire set the field price at 375 Fcfa per Kg and "the product was still sold off between 200 and 100 Fcfa" , as well as in 2018 where the price guaranteed set at 350 Fcfa, was sold at between 200 and 100 Fcfa, observes the GIE-PROCACI. Kamara Amara, president of GIE-PROCACI, deplores the fact that “to date, nothing has been done and the Cotton Cashew Council continues to be tricky in order to remain the only body controlling the sector, while the actors in the cashew sector wish verbally the establishment of their interprofession for a more fluid management of the sector ” . The Economic Interest Group of Cashew Producers includes national federations of cashew producers from Côte d'Ivoire as well as cooperatives and individual producers, from the 19 cashew production regions of the country. Côte d'Ivoire, the world's leading producer of cashew, projects production of around 800,000 tonnes for the 2020 marketing year compared to 761,000 tonnes for the previous season.
