Nov 20th, 2015

ABOUT seven percent of the export levy being accumulated from cashew nuts will be issued to Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), to strengthen expertise and develop researchers’ knowledge in the production of the Cash Crop. The Vice Chairman of the Cashewnuts Board of Tanzania, Mr Mudhihiri Mudhihiri, made the remarks in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday during the official closure of the Third International Cashew Conference which was organized by the NARI, CBT and Cashew nuts Industry Development Trust Fund (CIDTF).Mr Mudhihiri pointed out that some cashew producing countries were still facing many technical and institutional challenges like marketing constraints, new diseases and pests outbreaks, technical know-how and inadequate planting materials.“Significant progress has been made in the improvement of Cashew conventional methods to further enhance production and productivity using modern techniques such as biotechnology,” said Mr Mudhihiri. There is a need to put in place efficient and effective strategies of implementing the outcomes of this conference, he said. “I hope you will all agree with me that all your deliberations will count for nothing if not put in practice,” he noted. The Lead Scientists of the Cashew Research Programme, Mr Peter Massawe, pointed out that more than 30 papers were presented and discussed.“About 12 resolutions were reached on the best practice of producing, processing and marketing cashew nuts,” said Mr Massawe. Most of the technology of cashew nuts production is being borrowed by other countries from Tanzania.
