  • Many agricultural export businesses may suffer losses due to US reciprocal taxes

    Apr 4th, 2025

Pepper is one of the key agricultural products that has a good position in the US market. Mr. Le Viet Anh, Chief of Office of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), said that Vietnam is the largest pepper supplier to the US, accounting for 77% of the country's pepper imports in 2024. On the other hand, the US is also the largest market for Vietnamese pepper. In 2024, pepper exports to the US will reach 409 million USD, accounting for 31% of total pepper export turnover to all markets. Since the US is the largest market, in the first months of this year, many Vietnamese pepper enterprises have signed many long-term orders with US importers, including orders with delivery dates until August and September this year. Therefore, the fact that Mr. Trump signed an executive order imposing reciprocal tariffs on all goods imported into the US is of particular interest to the pepper industry. According to Mr. Le Viet Anh, the fact that the Donald Trump administration applied a 10% import tax on all goods imported into the US has caused great concern for Vietnamese pepper exporting enterprises. Because for orders signed for export to the US before April 2, pepper prices have not yet included this 10% tax. Therefore, the risk of loss from orders signed before April is not small. Faced with this situation, some businesses are considering renegotiating with US importers so that each side will bear a portion of the general tax rate for all imported goods of 10%. Regarding the corresponding tax on goods imported from Vietnam to the US, the pepper industry is starting to find out what the specific tax rate is for Vietnamese pepper in order to find a solution. For the cashew industry, the US is also the largest market. In 2024, cashew exports to the US will reach 192 thousand tons, worth 1.154 billion USD. The US market accounts for 27% of both the volume and value of cashew exports to markets last year, and Vietnamese cashews currently account for about 90% of US cashew imports. Mr. Ta Quang Huyen, General Director of Hoang Son 1 Joint Stock Company (Binh Phuoc), commented that at present, it is not possible to know how much the reciprocal tax that the US will impose on Vietnamese cashew nuts imported into the US will be. But certainly the import tax and reciprocal tax will cause the price of cashew nuts in the US to increase. However, supermarkets in the US can only accept an increase in the price of cashew nuts at a certain level, not an increase corresponding to the tax imposed on cashew nuts imported from Vietnam. Therefore, US importers will reduce the price of Vietnamese cashew nuts, leading to a significant decrease in the export price of Vietnamese cashew nuts. When the price of cashew nuts decreases, cashew businesses that have rushed to buy large quantities of raw cashew nuts to store in warehouses may encounter great difficulties. Because the price of raw cashew nuts at the time of purchase is often calculated based on the price of exported cashew nuts, when the price of cashew nuts decreases due to the US tariff policy, the price of cashew nuts will be unbalanced with the price of raw cashew nuts purchased before, thereby leading to losses for cashew businesses that rushed to buy a lot of raw cashew nuts to store when the price of raw cashew nuts was at a high level. Mr. Huyen shared that in the context of an unstable market, full of fluctuations due to trade policies and tax policies of major markets, to minimize risks, cashew businesses need to stay calm, closely monitor market fluctuations, and should only buy raw cashews when the price of this item is at a safe level, with low risks.
