PROJECTS EXECUTED FOR CASHEW INDUSTRY

In the Indian cashew industry the Cashew Nut Shell Liquid has remained a coveted output due to the lack of knowledge on actual production and consumption of the product.

There exits a wide gap in the actual and potential production of CNSL. Highly fluctuating production and in-turn exports in a year and fluctuation within the season were pose problems to users in obtaining the required quantity of CSNL at the required point of time. Hence understanding the changing dynamics of CNSL in India was the important objective for major users to develop strategies to tap the untapped market. The project involved mapping the producers and consumers of CNSL in all major states and working on possible supply options incorporating details such as seasonality of supply, export etc.

In our research on Indian cashew industry for last six years, we have been interacting with the stakeholders of the industry in the country on a frequent basis. During our interactions, the stakeholders had raised serious doubts about the actual RCN production of Maharashtra, which is reported to be very optimistic. So we began our sojourn to explore the real production of raw cashew nuts in Maharashtra. Our research in the Konkan region of Maharashtra has revealed that the total RCN production in the region was less than 50% of figure quoted by the concerned authority during the year.

The results of the research emerged from the primary interactions with the stakeholders like Cashew Growers, Traders, Processors, Government Officials, Research Scientists and autonomous bodies involved in cashew procurement and development in the region with significant involvement and experience in the cashew industry. The results were also verified with analysis involving matching of the production figures with the extent of local processing and RCN movements.

The study was conducted to map the various factors governing the price behavior of Indian cashew and to measure the export competitiveness with relation to major exporters of the world. The results of the study were compiled and released in our publication titled "Indian Cashew Handbook-2002".
